Thieving Magpies, Murdering Crows

Monday: Clear sky at first this morning but more wet weather is predicted.
Some cloud developed at around mid-day but the rain stayed away.

Our pair of nesting Magpies may well have eggs because I witnessed the local friendly Squirrel attempting to raid the guarded 'doughnut' shaped nest.
A 'cops and robbers' type chase developed as the two birds pursued the Squirrel up and down the branches of the Hawthorn, resisting it's attempt to get at the nest.
Both species of animals are intelligent, quick thinkers, I could see that - as the Squirrel seemed to be successfully herded out of the tree it doubled back and headed for it's quarry but not quick enough for the parents to be, as they caught up and headed off the renewed attack in the nick of time.
On returning from the school run I notice that a 'murder' has appeared on neighbouring rooftops, this is of the Carrion Crow Corvus corone corone variety. Nine black Crows, gathered like Crebain, servants of darkness in the Tolkein tales. Their quest might be the partially incubated eggs or the fresh meat of newly hatched garden birds.
