Mini Meadow

A little rain fell during the early hours of Friday morning which followed a fairly dry, sometimes sunny few days. By 6 a.m. the rain had stopped and the day gradually improved with some pleasant sun by 3 p.m.

The idea of a mini-meadow had been in my mind for a while but with a very small lawn it wasn't clear where it would fit.
I decided that a strip along the edge of the pond would provide the best effect without losing too much lawn and clothes line space.
With a metal tined lawn rake and the lawn mower I prepared a strip about 50 cm wide, raking out most of the grass and cut the remainder as short as possible.
After working in a little horticultural sand I sowed a mixture of seed which contained annual Poppies, Corn Marigold Corn Cockle, Cornflower and also perennial Ox-eye Daisy and Wild Pansy.

A further light covering of sand to finish off and that - I hope, will be our wild meadow in miniature.
This method will leave seedlings very prone to slug/snail attack, I will have to try and be vigilant and hope that the frogs and birds will help out.
