HDRA - How to make compost
Books will often say that compost heaps will attract wildlife , I agree this is true but I have never found an Adder, or Slow worm or Hedgehog hiding in my compost.
It has been found suitable by Mice when I have allowed dry areas to develop.
By far the most common wildlife are Woodlice, the first stage of my compost system can be home to thousands of them. I think that the vast majority of them are the species Philoscia muscorum. They are key in the process of breaking down plant material into smaler components making it ready for the next stage of decomposition.
