I brought home some logs from a felled Bay tree that are about 4.5 to 5.5 inches thick.
I cut a length of 9 inches and took an inch off the top for a lid.
The problem was how to bore out the middle of the log. Drill bits and chisel were no good so I went to the DIY shop and asked what they had for tackling the job.
(This is not a commercial plug for the tool, but I have just found the website: http://www.3dborr.se)
They presented me with 'The 3D bit'. It's sort of a drill bit that cuts in every direction. Unlike a Spade bit which only cuts one way.
It is designed for drilling irregular holes for locksmiths or plumbers or electricians. The one I got is 18mm but other sizes are available.
I was able to grind out a large cavity in the log leaving about half an inch thickness for the walls.
When I had got deep enough I drilled a hole through the side near the bottom for the entrance. I think it will need a couple of small holes in the back to improve ventilation and something to secure the lid.
That is basically it, I shall treat it as an experiment and see how it can be improved.
Unlike a plywood square box it does not have two compartments, I will built one like that and compare the results.
Obviously it is the same procedure to make a rustic bird bird box which is the next project!
