Yesterday I took a bold step and with some effort I removed the Flag Iris from the small garden pond.
It has been in since the pond was created in spring 2002 and was threatening to take over completely. The pond now looks a little cloudy where the mud was stirred up.
This was an impulsive action but as it needed doing I thought I'd do it while the weather was warm rather than in mid winter.
When the plant is in flower it's makes a spectacular feature and is popular with bees and other insects. The dense root system acts as a biological water filter helping to keep it clear. But despite that it was too large for the pond and so it had to go. I must now decide what should replace it.
