I watched a solitary Dunnock in the garden today. The name Dunnock means "dun-coloured bird"
Their behavior is almost mouse like in the way they forage around the ground rarely taking a perch higher in the shrubbery. The title Hedge Sparrow as they were once more often called is not really appropriate , the resemblence to House Sparrows is only superficial, they are not alike in habit or species. They belong to a family group called Accentors, 'small ground and scrub-dwelling birds that hop around in a characteristically crouched posture.' They can be mistaken for juvenile Robins who exhibit similar behaviour in the garden.
The BTO say that the status of this bird has declined in the past twenty years but has shown a little recovery recently, they remain on the Amber list
