Identified as Grey Dagger,
Acronicta psi, by Chris Court on UK Leps
This colourful moth larva dropped to the ground from the branches of the garden Crab Apple. I was sat close by having a cuppa.
It may have originated from the Hawthorn at the end of the garden.

I found one like this in my hair!
it had taken a tumble from a nearby tree.
Is there any specific function regarding the tuft of hairs on the fourth segment?
thanks.
