Grass Snake injured

Returning to Lancing via the Old Salts Farm Road yesterday I became the perpetrator of a crime against nature but there was nothing I could have done to avoid it.
Around a bend in the middle of the road a Grass snake was slithering it's way across the tarmac, I was on it before I could take evasive action although I tried at the last moment to change my course.
I stopped the car and went back to see what damage I had done, the snakes tail had been crushed and part of it's internal organs were showing, despite this kept moving and continued to the edge of the road and up onto a grass bank that led to a large school playing field. Then I noticed that in the grass was another Grass Snake, this one smaller. There was little I could do so I returned to the car, feeling somewhat ashamed but resolved that I could not have altered my course and avoided the Snake.
